5. Ensure your heater and defroster work. Again, this goes back to the comfort and visibility thing. You don’t want your windows fogging up while you are driving and you don’t want to be freezing cold and shivering while driving!
6. Refer to your owner’s manual about oil. The colder it is, the thicker your oil is going to become. Some engines are rated for different types of oil depending on the current climate and temperature ranges.
7. Maintain proper tire inflation levels. Air is a gas and when it is cold, gas contracts. Plus, if your tires are underinflated then your traction will not be at its best because less of the tire will be touching the road surface.
8. Invest in snow tires. All-season tires are great, but snow tires offer far better traction. Plus, you can keep snow tires for a few seasons because you don’t keep them on your car year-round.
9. Test your antifreeze ratio. Ideally, the ratio is half antifreeze and half water. You need antifreeze to keep the water in your radiator from freezing during the winter weather. You can buy test strips at your local auto parts store to make sure your ratio is up to par.
10. Belts and hoses. The cold weather will make your belts and hoses go downhill faster than normal, especially if there are already cracks in your belts.

KIA Motor Company and Ford Motor Company have both issued recalls for safety reasons. Ford Motors has issued their recall in 21 states, The District of Columbia, and Canada. Ford Motor Company has issued a recall for the Windstar van (1992-2003). This Ford vehicle is no longer in production, but it has been proven that in areas where road salt is more common that it can cause corrosion. This corrosion can cause a crack in the rear axle. This crack can lead to unsafe driving problems, and this recall is also cost free to the customer. The repairs can be made at any local ford dealership, and if the vehicle’s rear axle can not be reinforced Ford will provide a rental vehicle free of charge until the rear axle is replaced. Please keep in mind this recall is not for every Windstar van.
KIA Motor Company has also issued a recall on their vehicles. This recall is issued for safety problems with the wiring in the KIA Soul and the KIA Sorento. The wiring problem could lead to a car fair. This recall is issued world wide, and already more then 56,000 vehicles have been recalled. The KIA Soul was the fastest moving model of the KIA line up, and now many believe that KIA does not have any more support.
Car Airbags – Where Did the Car Airbag Idea Come From?

In the modern world automotive manufacturers are continually striving to improve each vehicle’s safety by implementing the latest technology, such as sensors, or making the vehicle itself stronger. But what about those basic safety pieces such as the airbag, where did that come from?
In 1967 Dr. Allen S. Breed developed a sensor that utilizes a small ball in a metal tube as a crash detector. If the ball suddenly impacts one side of the tube it sends a message that the vehicle has probably gotten in an accident and subsequently activates the available safety features that the vehicle offers.
This device and permutations of it were used in the early to mid 1970′s with the airbag restraint system. In 1971 Ford build a fleet of cars to experiment with using an airbag. Later in 1973 GM followed in their footsteps on their Pine City Chevrolet vehicles with Buick, Cadillac, and Oldsmobile coming in 1974.
There was an international interest in improving automobile safety and the airbag fit right in with their priorities. However, seat belts became the primary focus for a couple decades until airbags became standard on vehicles in the early to mid ’90s.
1980 saw Mercedes add the frontal airbag to their S-Class models. In the case of an accident, the vehicle would sense the impact and automatically tighten the seat belts and deploy the airbags. Porsche actually became the first automaker to have both passenger and driver airbags as OEM (standard equipment) in their 1987 944 Turbo’s. During the rest of the ’80s automakers progressively added airbags to their vehicles until most had them in the early ’90s. Trucks and related vehicles would not follow in suit until halfway through the decade.
It is now a DOT regulation that all vehicles made in America have airbags, including Iowa City cars unless special permits have been obtained.
Mazda to Recall 500,000 Models Worldwide!

Mazda will recall nearly half a million vehicles throughout the world for a power steering defect. The recall is the largest ever for Mazda and it has filed applications with various local authorities to recall 215,000 models in the United States and over 10,000 in China. The recalls affect the Axela and the Premacy vehicle models which is known as the Mazda 3 and the Mazda 5 in the United States. The models affected were manufactured between 2007 and 2008. Dodge Jeep CT models were not affected by the defect.
In the Mazda 3 and 5 vehicle models, the sudden loss of power steering was reported and is a potential problem. The loss of power steering does not result in the total loss of vehicle control, however it may make a vehicle more difficult to control. Loss of power steering can make maneuvering during emergencies more difficult and it may result in more crashes as well.
So far there have been three accidents related to the defect but there have been no fatalities. Mazda offered the recall in order to avoid future problems and accidents. Mazda has been successful at staying out of recall news for quite some time, but now the company will join the likes of Toyota and GM as automakers that have issued massive recalls for 2010. Toyota’s recalls have dealt with more potentially severe issues including braking issues and fires.
Mazda will replace affected vehicles which have a problem with their steering pump. Rust could break loose from a high pressure pipe in the steering mechanism which would result in the shutting down of the steering pump. Mazda has known about the problem for some time but has now issued a recall for the affected models.

Will the New Star Safety System Improve Toyota’s Image?

Toyota announced on June 9, 2010 that they would be introducing a Star Safety System that includes 5 key safety features. The Star Safety System would be included on all new Toyota models. The new system is a part of Toyota’s advertising campaign to restore their image of being a safe and reliable manufacturer after the recent recalls of 2009 and 2010. Since Toyota’s problems, other foreign competitors like Nissan, whose top models include the Nissan Altima, hope to increase their market shares. Mazda sales have also improved – in particular the Mazda 6 – which can be serviced at a Bradenton Mazda Service has been a strong seller.
The Star Safety System includes the following saftey featuress: Traction Control (TRAC), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), and Brake Assist.
Traction Control is a feature that is designed to help the car maintain its traction on a wide range of driving environments including wet, icy, and uneven surfaces. The TRAC sensors are activated when a wheel begins to slip on any of these surfaces. The system transfers power to the wheels that have traction and reduces power on the wheels that do not have traction.
The Vehicle Stability Control system prevents wheel slippage and traction loss by reducing speed and applying brakes to the wheels that require it. It does this be monitoring the angle that the vehicle is traveling and sensors detect when the front or rear wheels slip. When the sensors detect wheels slipping, it applies the brakes or reduces engine power in order to regain traction.
The Anti-Lock Brake System prevents brakes from locking with brake pulsing on each wheel which allows for better control if the brakes have to be applied quickly. When brakes are applied quickly the brakes may lock and the vehicle might skid. The pulsing releases pressure on the brakes fractions of a second at a time.
The Electronic Brake-force Distribution keeps a vehicle more stable when it is braking. The EBD redistributes the brake force that an abrupt stop brings.
Brake Assist detects “panic braking” and adds the pressure needed in order to prevent a collision.
With these new features being included on every new Toyota, the company hopes to improve its image among consumers and restore consumer confidence.
